Tessellation
At first In this project we built a surface with Grasshopper using Expression command, the surface was based on an equation, every direction in our project such as X, Y, Z had a specific equation and range, then with paneling command we divided the surface into triangles, we scaled the triangles in smaller size and subtracted them from the previous triangles, these subtractions provided a pattern for us. The Main methods we used in this project were Tessellation, Triangulation and Paneling.
The material used in the prototype was cardboard we cut the shapes that the project required also we hatched the places that we needed to fold them using laser machine.
Casting
In this project we found a minimal surface called CLP using a plugin in Grasshopper, then it was turned in to mesh and specified a point on each poly surface and for each point we created a fixed size cube. The mesh was divided into many smaller cubes, then we subtracted it from another cube for building a cast. we divided the cast into two parts in order to bring out the mentioned form from the cast.
The material used for the cast was 8 millimeters MDF sheets. We created the cast using contour method in Grasshopper. The cast made to be waterproof therefore it could be applied for multiple times. The material used was plaster and concrete. our main challenge in this project was for the material to reach all part of the cast. Eventually we could achieve the form by experimenting to reach the right resistance and form.
Light print
In this project we used an ABB robot with a LED on it to draw the curves that was modeled in Grasshopper also an end effector was needed to hold the LED. We realized that LED could not be controlled to work with the written code in Grasshopper so we were not able to turn it off using the robot in the needed parts so continues curves was modeled at that level of the project. The main challenge was to make the LED turn off where it was needed and make a connection between the LED and the code. In order to achieve this goal, we created an electrical circuit using a relay to control the light which was connected to the robot control system. Therefore it provided us the ability to design discontinues curves.
In order to capture the designed curves, photos were taken, using the long exposure technique.
